FINAL PRODUCT
what is umbo?
UMBO is a lamp that is shipped as a single flat piece of plywood, allowing for easy construction without need for adhesive. It uses living hinges to create a flowing, radial pattern.
what was my goal?
Since this is my first official illustration job, I wanted to do my best to establish a distinct style. Primarily though, I wanted to help out the author with her goal and to have fun with the illustrations.

brainstorming
I started my process with a simple mood board and correlating quadrant analysis.
living hinges
I knew I wanted to utilize living hinges in my design, as it opened up possibilities for more organic forms:
I created my own living hinge pattern
problem: it sucked and didn’t bend enough
solution: I tested free pre-existing templates until I found the pattern that bent in the way I needed
prototyping
I made a single, mid-fidelity prototype out of cardboard before I starting working with the final material, birch plywood
After this, most of my prototyping focused on the frame and the “gear” pieces that would make up the interior of the lamp
This resulted in a myriad of failed attempts and subsequent tweaks to the design
My initial sketches made sure to include different types of living hinges
They focused heavily on organic forms, copying structures from plants, fruits, and other existing lamps
