01

testing products

i used an existing, standard microplane to determine its most prevalent issues. this is a tool i use frequently, so i was familiar with its regular function.

02

pain points

through personal investigation, user testing, and conversations with culinary students, i was able to define these three pain points as the biggest areas for redesign.

03

product hacks

i disassembled and modified an on-market microplane to create three new concepts. the first addresses wrist strain by adding a non-slip pivot and the front. the second adds a slide to rest your hand on for protection. the third creates a more ergonomic grip that allows your hand to grip more easily.

04

form study

i decided to incorporate the idea of my first and third product hacks in a new study. i wanted the angle to be changed like the first, and the grip to be adjusted like the third. i created a foam form study to explore the idea of a microplane that rests on the table.

05

rapid sketching

ro further iterate on the physical form, i created a series of silhouette sketches defined by the same general area and outline.
